The A PLACE OF HER OWN Social Service Initiative is well underway! In 2011, the San Francisco Arts Commission awarded AAWAA an Arts and Communities Innovative Partnerships (ACIP) Exploratory Grant, commissioning us to research and cultivate potential partnerships between AAWAA and San Francisco non-arts organizations serving Asian American women. AAWAA has seen the creative process behind A PLACE change the lives of our participating artists. We plan to take our creative process and insightful journey for personal growth and healing beyond arts exhibitions into the social service field. In the service of this mission, we have assembled an amazing and informal advisory team with tremendous experience in social service, healing, and the arts. Our staff is hard at work sourcing additional grants, formulating the A PLACE process into a curriculum for non-artists, and initiating relationships with potential participants for our exploratory phase workshop series.

Cheers to Muses is a pioneering anthology featuring visual art, fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction by Asian American women who challenge contemporary and historical assumptions about what it means to create Asian American art. What distinguishes Cheers to Muses from many other anthologies are the moving dedications, written by our contributors, to other Asian American women whose lives or works have influenced and inspired their own. They serve as a testament to the fact that these contemporary artists and writers are part of a continuum of the Asian American woman’s struggle for independence and creative freedom.

As part of AAWAA's mission to provide greater awareness about Asian American women artists and their art, we're currently promoting the book in colleges and universities. Getting Cheers to Muses into the classrooms, either as a Creative Writing, Ethnic Studies or Fine Arts text will provide our artists with much deserved visibility. Our goal is for 2-5 professors to agree to put the book on their syllabus this Fall semester. If you know of any professors who might be interested in including our book in their curriculum, please email kelsay@aawaa.net.

As the year winds down, well... UP for AAWAA, hear are a few thoughts about this year.

Thank you to the many volunteers that have come in to help AAWAA sustain it's mission to present and document the work of Asian American women in the arts. We can definitely put our stake in the ground about awareness in the academic centers and the de Young Museum, a few more curators and funders know about us and hear from us regularly. Thanks to the advent of modern technology, we've been able to more fully capture the works and the artists we've been fortunate enough work with.

Dear Friend of AAWAA,

If you had a place of your own, what would it be? For many women, regardless of age or status, that question is hard to answer. Historically, women have rarely learned to claim a space of their own, metaphorically or physically.

AAWAA’s multi-phase art project, entitled “A Place of Her Own,” will feature 35 Asian American women artists who will respond to the question creatively in a major exhibition at SOMArts Cultural Center in May 2010, as part of the Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center’s United States of Asian America Festival. The process of answering this question has the potential for deep internal reflection. Recently, during the prestigious de Young Museum, S.F. residency, several AAWAA artists came to profound realizations during the process of creating their work.

By encouraging women to reflect on their own identity and to express it artistically, we will empower them to become self sufficient, confident women who have a strong sense of themselves, able to relate to the world around them on their own terms. AAWAA also intends to involve women’s and social service organizations, such as women’s shelters, mental health agencies, etc. in the development of “A Place of Her Own,” as these institutions also deal with women’s self-worth.

This is part of the work that AAWAA has done for the past 20 years and will continue to do. As we continue to celebrate our 20^th anniversary season, we are proud of our many achievements. We have been operating on a collaborative volunteer model of leadership, but we now need to hire a part-time assistant to coordinate the many tasks demanded by our high profile projects. Funding has always been scarce due to our small budget size, but thanks to the dedication of our leadership and the continuing support of generous individuals like you, we are now an established 501©3 organization with the potential to make a significant impact on the lives of women and girls for generations.

The exhibit is a celebration of the "61st Anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights". This will be part of the "Second Annual Human Rights Fair", December 5, from 12 noon to 6 pm, held at the Louden Nelson Community Center , 301 Center Street, Santa Cruz. Empty Shoes: Poems on the Hungry and the Homeless

Shizue Seigel has two poems in a new anthology, “Empty Shoes: Poems on the Hungry and the Homeless,” published by Popcorn Press, and edited by UW-La Crosse Instructor Patrick T. Randolph and his wife, Gamze.

The idea behind the project came when Randolph asked his wife how a poet could make a small difference. She mused, why not use a craft to have fun, raise social awareness, showcase poets and help people in need? Randolph’s answer was an anthology. The book includes 80 poets three foreign countries and 28 states, 151 poems and 30 photographs. It’s the first of its kind with such depth and participation of poets, says Randolph. The book is No. 4 on Amazon’s hot release list.

This is Randolph’s first book of poetry, “Father’s Philosophy,” has been a bestseller for Popcorn Press. “Empty Shoes: Poems on the Hungry and the Homeless” is available on Popcorn Press’s Web site, www.popcornpress.com and Amazon.com.

All profits from the book will go to nationwide programs devoted to helping the hungry and homeless.

November 19, 2009 – March 7, 2010

Co-conceived by the California African American Museum and the Skirball Cultural Center as one exhibit split between each institution, An Idea Called Tomorrow is intended to inspire visitors to reflect upon the active role we must all play in bringing about a more just, equitable, and peaceful future. On view at CAAM is An Idea Called Tomorrow-1showcasing works by fifteen contemporary artists imagining what a civil future looks like. Among the artists are Abdelali Dahrouche, Dominique Moody, Joyce Dallal, and Nobue Betty Kano. The artists’ ethnicities and backgrounds are as diverse as their presentations, which address a broad range of social justice issues of both regional and global relevance, such as environmental sustainability, shelter for all, human equity, equal access and respect, healthy living, reconciliation and forgiveness, and cooperation and peace.

As a side note, I had the privilege of helping Dr. Fantone interview Betty Kano for her current research project in Asian American women's art and would just like to say that Kano-san is rich in wisdom and intellect. Her intelligence, introspection, and personal story are all imbibed into her works in such a profoundly political way. I'm in awe!!! Please check her out. :) -T

Cynthia Tom and Shizue Seigel participated in Dia de los Muertos 2009: Altars for the Spirits/Offerings for the Living, curated by Rene and Rio Yanez and held at SOMArts, 934 Brannan Street in San Francisco from October 16 to November 7th. This very special annual exhibition of installations and flat artwork has been curated by Rene Yanez for twenty years. It's a moving, thought-provoking blend of multicultural tradition and imagery with today's social and political commentary. Cynthia has been participating in this annual show for several years; Shiz was thrilled to be participating for first time.

Kathy Fujii-Oka, Nancy Hom and Cynthia Tom attended a very valuable all day conference in San Francisco yesterday. It was sponsored competely by the California Wellness Foundation. Panel discussions included experts and information regarding explanations of the current state of non-profit funding, focus on the economy now and how to uncover future needs based on what the economy has done to our particular communities, suggestions of where the money is, how to use Social and New media, branding and most important is that funders, due to our economic times, is collaboration and partnering to demonstrate good financial sterwardship and a conciousness for sustainability.

Celebrating community diversity, the Pajaro Valley Arts Council's show "Mi Casa es Tu Casa 2009" showcases the rich art and tradition of altar-making. The annual theme is inspired by Día de Los Muertos and the gallery has invited participation by local community groups.

Santa Cruz AAWAA members Lucien Kubo, Dawn Nakanishi, Maggie Yee, and Reiko Michisaki have created an altar joining Chinese and Japanese cultural traditions. Please join us on November 1 for Day of the Dead Events planned in the Watsonville Plaza, including music, dance, art, outdoor altars, champurrado and pan de muerto, and which will culminate in a procession from the Plaza to the Gallery to celebrate the opening reception. I was disappointed that I could not come to the celebration but I did enjoy meeting the artists and matching the names to the art work when they checked in on Sunday.

A big hand to Cyndy and Shari for all their hard work in putting this together. It was hard to imagine that everything came together; when I left Monday afternoon, there was still a lot of art to be put up. Good Job!

6:30-9:30 PM
SOMArts Cultural Center, 934 Brannan Street, San Francisco
Tickets: $15-$50 sliding scale, students $10
Any amount over $10.00 per ticket is tax deductable to the extent allowed by law.
